Utilizing Alumni for College Readiness

Although this start of the school year might be unlike any other, Fall is the time of year when 12th graders apply for admission to college and for federal student aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. Alumni are the perfect mentors to guide students and parents through these processes.

Facts about FAFSA:

  • FAFSA forms are available on October 1.

  • Students should submit their FAFSA form by the earliest financial aid deadline of the schools to which they are applying, usually by early February.

  • While the FAFSA form determines an applicant's eligibility for federal student aid, it also is an application for funds from many schools and from the state.

  • People whose income is too low to require them to file taxes should file a federal tax return anyway; they may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

  • Some students and their parents may qualify for free help filling out tax returns

Check out the activities available in your Alumni Toolkit dashboard. Select the “College Readiness” section to see which of your alumni have already expressed interest in volunteering for these types of events.

Don't have any alumni in your database yet? Recruit alumni to create profiles!

As always, thank you for all that you do for your students, families, and your communities. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to support you and your alumni!
